What to Expect with Coaching

  • The majority of clients find that 4-8 coaching sessions is most effective for initiating lasting change, or to reach a goal. Some clients receive coaching for 3-6 months for long-term transitions and goals, while others find just one or two sessions are helpful for short-term needs. Depending on the client’s goals, it is helpful to allow enough time for the implementation of the changes and tasks determined. Accountability and support increases the chances of completion and adherence to your desired changes and new habits. While every client’s situation is unique, Nick highly recommends and often requires a commitment from the client of at least 4 sessions, meeting weekly or every other week.

  • I completed my coaching training and certification in 2008 through the Life Purpose Institute, based in San Diego. This certification is recognized and accredited by the International Coaching Federation. I currently have a private coaching practice based in southern Oregon, and frequently coach clients from around the country as well by phone or Skype. My undergraduate degree from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, was in 1989, and my Master’s of Divinity Degree from Princeton Theological Seminar was in 1996.

Before moving to Oregon, I served for ten years as the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Gridley, California, where I worked with couples of all ages and led many engaged couples through premarital counseling. I’ve led marriage workshops and have written the workbook Happily Ever After? Why Couples Plateau After Marriage and How to Get Unstuck.

  • Coaching sessions by phone are very common, even among local clients who would prefer to save time and gas to drive to an appointment. Coaching sessions by phone have the option of being held in the early morning or evening when you are home. While face-to-face coaching provides an ideal format for communication between the coach and the client, coaching by phone is still a very effective format, and can even allow for greater focus and listening.

If you do coach by phone, it is recommended that you find a place where you will not be distracted for the entire hour (no kids, no TV, no computer on, etc.). Some clients have used Skype effectively, but many times the audio is sub-par and the video can be distracting. If you have questions about which format would be best for you, feel free to discuss this during your free consultation.

  • Take a moment to complete our short survey which which will identify what areas of coaching you’re interested in. Once I receive it, I will be in touch by phone or email to set up your free 45-minute consultation.

After this, a formal coaching agreement can be entered. You will then be sent via email the initial intake documents, a simple questionnaire that will help us focus the first session and get you started on the path to reaching your goals.

Payments are required up front, and coaching packages of 4 or 8 sessions can be purchased for a small discount. You may be interested in signing up to receive the free monthly newsletter that will help you get more familiar with me and the coaching services I provides.

  • Any couple that is engaged, or who is seriously considering engagement should consider premarital counseling. Premarital counseling sounds a little technical and intimidating, but really it’s a very casual and effective opportunity to gain a better understanding of yourself and your spouse, and to be better equipped and prepared to begin the wonderful yet challenging journey of marriage. Couples fill out intake questionnaires, which offer the basis of discussion and counseling for the three sessions. Many churches require premarital counseling to be married in their church, and often times your sessions with Nick will fulfill that requirement. Many pastors welcome the specialized help as they have their own heavy workloads.

Questions About Personal Life Coaching

  • One on one coaching is fast becoming the preferred helping relationship among individuals seeking to reach personal and professional success and/or a more satisfying life. With overlaps into counseling and consulting, coaching is a series of face-to-face, or telephone sessions that enables clients to find greater clarity, effectiveness and results in their lives. Simply put, coaches help you sort things out, find direction, and meet your goals. They are trained in a highly effective process that includes self-exploration, alignment of strengths with passions and values, and the development of a strategic and realistic plan to overcome blocks and reach the desired aspirations of the client. Many coaches today have focused niches, or areas of specialty, but the process can be applied to almost any area of life.

  • In a word, the answer is – results. We have all tried making changes and improving areas of our life, but good intentions often end in frustration or half-hearted efforts. Or, we may pour out our best efforts, only to later realize we’re aiming at the wrong target. Coaching helps you make the right decisions, at the right time, for the right reasons. It is not an outside consultant coming in and telling you what to do and how to do it. True coaching is always a client-driven process, seeking to honor your true values, concerns, passions, and priorities.

Part of what makes it so effective is that after a direction or solution is chosen, a realistic plan is designed to get you there. Coaching does not pat you on the back and send you off with best wishes. Rather, it holds you accountable through every step of the process, helping you make necessary adjustments when obstacles come in your path, and keeps your focus and mind set where it needs to be. In sports, we have recognized this for generations, but it is true in all areas of our life – with a coach or a mentor, you can attain a higher level of effectiveness and performance than you can on your own.

  • The answer is, both. There are times when the wife and husband will have sessions together with Nick, either in person or via conference call. We also offer private coaching retreats for couples here at Pleasant Creek, which is a very effective way to get away from home and take significant steps to new growth. However, the majority of the time Nick works with either just one of the spouses, or with both of them at separate call times. In many cases this can be a more effective format.

If your spouse is not interested or able to participate and commit to coaching, there is still significant progress that can be made by participating in coaching alone. In fact, your own growth and new habits can often be a catalyst for change and growth in your spouse. Take note that coaching is not about “changing your spouse,” but about changing you. While coaching requires some commitment and effort on your part, it is very rewarding and exciting as you begin to see positive results.

General Questions about Coaching

  • At Abundant Life Now I have said and believe that anyone who wants to improve his or her marriage, family, life and work can benefit from coaching. There is great value in utilizing an objective and skilled listener who is committed to your success. Those who get the most out of coaching are clients that are self motivated and who are not in need of deep healing from wounds or dysfunctions of the past, but are ready and excited to move forward into new places of growth and success in their marriage or in their work and life.

Most clients fall into one of three categories: those who don’t know what they want, but are currently dissatisfied; those who know what they want, but don’t know how to get there; and finally, those who know what they want, and how to get there, but don’t seem to have the self discipline, confidence or support to gain traction and get going.

Many talented and successful people utilize a coach. Often, it is the multi-talented and multi-faceted people who spread themselves too wide and thin because they are involved in such a wide number of projects and responsibilities. Coaching is extremely helpful in prioritizing and gaining clarity on how you want to spend your days.

Some clients receive coaching for 3-6 months for long-term transitions and goals, while others find just one or two sessions are helpful for short-term needs. • The actual process and format are almost identical, with the difference simply being a matter of working with a coach who has experience or expertise in a particular area of life. Life coaches are more generalists and work with clients in many areas of life, such as: career, health, transitions, life balance, finances spiritual growth, relationships, etc. Marriage coaches specialize their coaching practice in the area of helping clients maintain strong and healthy marriages. The coaching techniques of both are often similar, and marriage coaches will often coach clients in some of those others areas of life that may be affecting the client’s marriage.
